Most people are aware that Egyptians loved cats but guess what? They had dogs to, even though dogs were not kept in the homes as much as cats, they were more often revered as symbols or gods. Dogs were not considered pets they were more of hunters and protectors. History tells us cats were mummified with their owners but so were there canine hunting companions. At the height of the ancient Egyptian civilization, training included the use of collars and leashing, however collars alone had been in use for many years. Dog collars of this time were considered a work of art themselves.
In Greece where they used farm dogs they wore collars similar to the spike-studded ones their medieval successors wore. Sheepdogs needed to be white so they were visible at night, they were given a leather collar studded with nails, this was called a melium. This type of collar provided protection for the sheepdog as he guarded the sheep from wolves. The collar protected his neck so it was difficult for the wolf to bite him there.

The Greek farmers, like many dog owners today like to have their dog fierce for protection but not overly aggressive. They wanted them to be tough enough to protect them from intruders but friendly enough so they would not turn on themselves. Back then the preferred the sheepdogs to be white but the farmhouse dogs needed to be black so the could hide from the intruders.
The ancient Greeks and the Egyptians continued to fawn over their dogs just like many civilizations after them. In towns, the little friendly dogs were called Alopekis and they were constant companion of children and the women. They would even herd small flocks of geese or whatever the family was raising.
Its said that in ancient Rome doggy devotion was so intense that Caesar had to publicly reprimand citizens for paying more attention to their dogs than to their children.
Back in the Middle Ages, dogs were used as shepherds and hunters. Plain leather was used for collars when the dog was used for boar hunting or hare hunting. The collar was an identifier and a means to attach a leash when the dog was not hunting. Interesting is the fact that when hunting the people used a stick on the collar rather than a leash, most likely to keep the dog from getting near to them while they were so excited. It was late 1700 that the decorative collars began to become the norm for the privileged pooch. New technologies in silver, gold, brass would fashion and stamp or engrave beautiful collars. Collars bore the name of the owner, rather than the dogs. This was the easiest method to have your dog returned to you.

Lovin your dog like we all do makes us want to give them all the best. The best care like homemade healthy dog food, food that gives them the nurishment they need to grow strong. We also don’t want to put them under stress when we go to work or when we are away from home for awhile, so we buy them and indoor doggie potty so they can go when they need to. So there is no reason we won’t give them the best in designer or custom dog collars. Give your dog some fashion and bling, they deserve it, they are your best friend, loyal and trustworthy.

I think you should focus on adult dogs. Everyone loves puppies because they’re cute and sweet, but sometimes their cuteness can lead to them getting spoiled and getting away with bad behavior. So when they grow up….you have the naughty adult dog issues. There is a lot of info out there on general puppy training, but if someone has the idea that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks…that just isn’t so…you CAN teach them…you just need to learn HOW to. So for all those adult dogs who end up in shelters for naughty behavior and finally find a new !home…do it for them and their new owners! Good luck
